Great South Lands of the Holy Sprit
Great South Lands of the Holy Sprit
‘Terra Australis del Espíritu Santu. Pedro Fernandez de Quiros 1606.’
Design Description:
This banner depicts the Islands of the South Pacific, the region named "The Great South Lands of the Holy Spirit," aflame in an ocean of blue. For many years Australia took the name of "The Great South Land of the Holy Spirit" for itself, but in the process defrauded its neighbors of the title and heritage that was also rightfully theirs. In 1606 when Pedro Fernández de Quirós recognized and declared this region to be "Terra Australis del Espiritu Santu," he declared this over all the islands and lands south of Vanuatu to the South Pole. This means that all of these nations are part of the Great South Lands of the Holy Spirit: Australia, Cocos Islands, East Timor, Fiji, Indonesia, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. It also includes the following dependencies and claims: Cook Islands, Coral Sea Islands, Antarctica, Chatham Islands, Ashmore and Cartier Islands, American Samoa, French Polynesia, Kermadec Islands, Lord Howe Island, New Caledonia, Niue, Norfolk Island, Pitcairn Island, Stewart Island, Tokelau and Wallis and Futuna Islands.
