ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Danganbarr Garrawurra was an extraordinary woman. Not only was she a wife, a mother, a Liyagawumirr Tribal Elder, and a Christian leader in the town of Galiwin’ku, but she managed to cross into the Western world with great success as an advocate for her Yolngu People. She filled and shaped the role of Indigenous Engagement Officer with the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

She was fearless!

During her 68 years as an Indigenous person interacting with the Western world, she saw and understood the things that needed to change for her people to be free.

David J Stanfield is a Freedom Activist and Facilitator who worked alongside Danganbarr for 15 years to support her so her voice could be heard across her community, across Australia, and across the world.

Under very strict instructions, he compiled the Synod presentation and this booklet which flowed out of it. He hopes it will be the first of several publications that express Danganbarr’s hope for her people and her plea to Western society to make room for them to grow and to become who God created them to be.

ABOUT THE BOOK
This book is the result of a presentation that Danganbarr delivered to the Uniting Church Northern Synod after the death of her older brother. Her brother, an Indigenous pastor, spoke to her in the hospital as he lay dying, and said, “Midiku, there is bäynu freedom: There is no freedom at all for Aboriginal people!”

She pondered his words for a year and then went to the Synod determined to ask them to set her people free.

The images on this cover were taken just days before Danganbarr returned home to Galiwin’ku and tragically passed away. She took with her a huge arsenal of truth, stories, and wisdom. This book is an attempt to begin to unpack what she left behind.

It contains a parable and a cry to set her people free so they can produce the fruit that God destined them to produce, to be shared with all Australians and the world.
